Learn about Blessed Stephen Bellesini - When Stephen Bellesini was beatified on 1 November 1904 by Pope Pius X, he became the first pastor to be elevated to the honors of the altar.
His feast is celebrated by the Augustinian Family on 3 February.

logoThe Secular Augustinians believe that the emblem of the Order definitely symbolizes the basis of Augustinian Spirituality.  The open book represents the Word of God.  It also represents the intellectual searching which must be part of a living faith.  The flaming heart suggests that love must be progressively profound and even passionate.  The arrow recalls the divine energy, the stimulating grace, which must be the source of thinking and loving.  It represents the very Spirit of God, dynamically piercing the minds and hearts and calling each one to a vivid and continual experience of the growth of faith, hope and love in each one’s personalities.  The emblem then, portrays the fundamental thrust of charism:  the inner experience of grace moving us to learn to love and to live toward God.  This is what “interiority” really is.

The Motto of the Order, “One mind and heart unto God”, adds a second feature to the charism: “community”.  Secular Augustinians must work to build up and support each other intellectually and affectively.  Each one seeks to become profound communicators of whom and what we are.  This calls for self sacrifice as it demands that each one open themselves to one another so that each can appreciate and love each other more profoundly and genuinely.  Augustinian Community means making real communication happen each and every day of life together: at worship, prayer, work, meals, recreation and every practical opportunity.

Secular Promises 2007

Secular Italy Pilgrimage
(Photos taken during Augustinian
Pilgrimage to Italy, 2007)

Several men and women made their promises together at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Castro Valley in 2007.  They promised to:

  • live the Gospel in the Spirit of St. Augustine
  • follow the Rule and General of the Order
  • live a simple life in keeping with the Beatitudes
  • attend and participate in liturgies and meetings of the Chapter
  • support the initiatives and projects adopted by the Chapter
  • participate in the celebration of the Feast of St. Augustine
  • commit to following the teachings of Catholic Social Justice
  • participate in each person's local Church
Several of the Seculars from the East Bay Chapter and Seculars from the Oregon Chapter along with members of Our Lady of Grace made a pilgrimage to the Augustinian sites in Italy.  They visited the Vatican and Augustinian Provincial House in Rome and the place of Blessed Stephen Bellisini's repose and the site of the appearance of Our Mother of Good Counsel in Gennazano.  They also stayed several days in San Gimignano at the Convento Augustino with the Fathers and Brothers.  From there, they toured Asissi, Siena, and the Monestario Augustino at Lucceto to hear the Sisters sing the Hours.  It was like being in Heaven with the angels!!  No Augustinian pilgrimage would be complete without visiting the village of Cascia, near to the home of Saint Rita Lucceto in the Province of Umbria, Italy.  Learn more about St. Rita at:
